Materials are substances of which something is made. Since civilization began materials along with energy have been used by people to improve their standard of living, research and development work to create new materials or to modify the properties of existing ones.
Powder metallurgy (P/M) is the art of technology to obtain finished products with specific properties and dimensions. The input raw materials used in such technology is metallic and non-metallic powders by pressing in close dies with subsequent controlled sintering.
One of the main characteristics of P/M technology is obtaining finished products containing controlled percentage of porosity, which is impossible to achieve the presence of such porosity by conventional techniques such as casting, forging, etc. Also, the percentage material scrap is nearly nil.
Now the application of P/M technique in the different fields of industry is growing rapidly. One of the common applications is the production of self lubricating bearings by P/M technique. So the aim of this case study is:
1. To gain much more information about powder metallurgy technique.
2. To be much closer to the operational sequence of this technique such as powder production, powder production, powder compaction and sintering processes.
3. To study in a deep way the management and control of a project relevant to powder metallurgy technique.
In the present case study a project of production of self lubricating bearing is selected.
